With the sadness in our news lately and the ongoing servitude of our military, I wanted to bring this post to you today. For without them we have nothing.
“These wines recognize and celebrate the achievements of the generations who served and continue to serve in Canada’s military”, stated Murray Souter, President & CEO of Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd.
They build on the heritage of Canada as both a people and a nation leveraging the 100th anniversary of the Great War (1914 – 1918) and the 150th Confederation Anniversary all of which contributed to Canada achieving nationhood and being recognized as an equal amongst the leading nations of the world. The positioning leverages the efforts of the Federal Government, the various Provincial Governments, Canadian Museum Association, Royal Canadian Legion and several large retail organizations in recognizing these events.
I was given these 1914 Honour and Valour Wines to try. I know, lucky girl eh? I grew up in Ontario not far from the Niagara Peninsula where these wines are from. Niagara region produces some great wines and I have been lucky enough to tour the area. These two great wines are a good example of the excellent quality that comes out of this region.
First up is the 1914 Valour, a 2013 vintage which is a blend of Merlot, Shiraz and Gamay.
I really enjoyed this wine and had it with a simple steak and potatoes dinner but it would also go with a big juicy cheeseburger fantastically. Think of pairing this with a smoked gouda cheeseburger, mmmmm!! Or Korean BBQ short ribs, delish!! This medium bodied wine has notes of black cherry and raspberry and black pepper spice on the nose. It tastes of dark red berry fruits, oak spice and cassis. A really easy drinking wine!
Next up is the 1914 Honour (2013 Vintage) which is a blend of Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay.
This is a great white wine, I tend to be into the whites lately. I loved this crisp white with grapefruit, floral & green apple tones on the nose. I had this wine with a big crisp salad with ham and cheese but it would go great with a panini with those same ingredients. Or a delicious grilled fish dinner. It tastes of citrus, honey & apple, just delightful!
Ask for these wines at your regular local liquor store, they will be appearing very soon. They will also be reasonably price too under $13 mark.
