A Butter Board is the latest thing trending for foodies. Our Garlic Butter Board is the perfect dip and nibble board around. Gorgeous roasted garlic marries beautifully with creamy salted butter, herbs, and some heat from chili flakes.
We love doing boards for entertaining like our Charcuterie Board, a Breakfast Charcuterie Board for your overnight guests, or a hauntingly delicious Halloween Cheese Board.
What is a Butter Board Used For?
What is the butter board trend? It is the latest TikTok trend and is an offshoot of a charcuterie board. It is just simply buttered up to the way you like it. For us, it is garlic butter. Who doesn’t already love bread and butter? Well, this food trend has just made it more elegant or, at the very least more fun.
The sky is the limit though, how you would like to have your bread and butter. Do you want a sweet spread with honey and cinnamon, a more floral touch with pretty edible flowers, or a smoky flavor from ancho chilies, chili, and more? The choice is up to you. Maybe you will just start with our gorgeous garlic butter and see where it takes you.
Who Created the Butter Board?
Justine Doiron had the first butter board concept to go viral on social media. But she credits a chef and cookbook author Joshua McFadden for the original idea.

Heads of garlic, roasted
Flaky sea salt
Fresh basil, rosemary, and thyme
Red pepper flakes (optional)
How to Make a Roasted Garlic Butter Board
Enjoy this delicious appetizer with family and friends but remember, no double dipping like any other dip or sharing board. Supply your guests with ample knives for them to scoop up their own butter onto a plate.
I also recommend a good clean, or brand new board for this recipe. You don’t want to share this appetizer on an old board that could be well contaminated from previous use.
We also left one garlic bulb whole for those that may want to take a break from the butter and just have the garlic. Mmmm, roasted sweet garlic!!
Lastly, have your butter at room temperature for easy spreading, and pay a bit extra to get good quality sticks of butter for this butter board.
To Roast the Garlic:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Slice the top 1/3 off of each head of garlic.
Drizzle each head with ½ tbsp of olive oil. Top with Kosher salt.
Bake in a garlic roaster or wrapped in foil for 35-45 min. or until soft.
Allow the garlic to cool for 20 – 30 minutes.
To Create the Butter Board:
Squeeze the garlic from one of the heads in a medium bowl.
Add the softened butter and mix until well combined.
Spread the butter on a good wooden board or platter.
Chop or tear the fresh herbs and sprinkle them over the butter and place the second head of roasted garlic on the board or platter.
Sprinkle the red pepper flakes and flaky sea salt over the butter.
Cut up a French loaf or French stick.
Serve with a couple of small butter knives to allow your guests to help themselves to the bread, butter, and garlic.
Variations to This Butter Board
Add other elements to a butter board by taking out the garlic and red pepper flakes and adding in touches like:
Spices – think cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger for maybe a sweet board, and flavors like chili, cumin, zaatar, etc. for a savory board.
Nuts – they add a lot of texture and flavor.
Onions – think thinly sliced green onion, red onions, or caramelized onions.
Citrus – add a sprinkle of orange or lemon zest.
Edible Flowers – these, of course, are easier to find in the spring and summer months; chive flowers from your garden or nasturtiums would be wonderful.
Cream Cheese – Totally change the butter to cream cheese and add in dollops of jam, honey, dried fruits, or fresh berries. Or make it savory with capers, red onions, and bagel seasoning for bagels and lox.
I think you are getting it now, aren’t you? The sky is the limit on this new trend. Let one of these boards be your own creation.
