What is Za’atar

Za’atar (pronounced zah-tar) is a Middle Eastern spice blend that’s earthy, tangy, and savory. It instantly adds big flavor to simple foods. The main ingredients are thyme, roasted sesame seeds, sumac and salt. In different regions, the ingredients may vary.

Why I Love This Recipe

  • So easy to make
  • Love the flavor of Za’atar
  • Yummy snack, serve it up at parties
  • If made with olive oil, healthy too
  • Perfect for movie night

What Ingredients are in Herbed Popcorn?

Recipe Ingredients.

Ingredients

Popcorn – Use a good-quality popcorn, one that you have used before and trust.

Butter, melted – You can pop the popcorn in oil or butter, and coat with either too.

Salt – I love a good Kosher salt that isn’t too salty.

Za’atar – This is available in grocery stores, specialty stores, and can be ordered online (link above).

Granulated garlic – I like using granulated garlic instead of powdered garlic now because it disperses without clumping.

Recipe Pro Tips

Pro Tips for the Best Herbed Popcorn

  1. Pop the popcorn fresh
Freshly popped popcorn holds seasoning better than pre-popped.
  2. Use melted butter or olive oil
Tossing popcorn with fat helps the herbs and seasonings stick evenly.
  3. Season while it’s hot
Add herbs immediately after popping so they cling to the kernels.
  4. Go easy at first
Start light with herbs and salt — you can always add more, but you can’t take it away.
  5. Try other herb blends
Italian seasoning or herbes de Provence work beautifully for bold flavor.
  6. Balance with acidity
A tiny squeeze of lemon zest or a pinch of citric acid brightens herbal notes.
  7. Finish with cheese (optional)
Parmesan or nutritional yeast adds savory depth without overpowering the herbs.
  8. Serve immediately
Herbed popcorn tastes best fresh while it’s warm and crisp.
