What are in Vanilla Baked Buttermilk Donuts?

Ingredients for Vanilla Baked Buttermilk Donuts.

I love making baked donuts as opposed to deep fried at home. They are infinitely easier to make and the kids can join into all the steps too.

Simple ingredients and the buttermilk just offer that little tang which is lovely in a sweet donut.

Eggs, lightly beaten
Butter, melted
All-Purpose flour, sifted
granulated sugar

How to Make Vanilla Baked Buttermilk Donuts

Adding flour to a mixer
Adding salt to a mixer
Adding buttermilk to a mixer
Adding eggs to a mixer

Let’s dive in and make these wonderful donuts. You may even want to double the recipe and make 24! Yum!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray the molds with non-stick spray and set them aside.

In a large bowl, add the dry ingredients, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix until combined.

Add the milk, eggs, vanilla, and butter to the flour mixture. Beat until combined. Do not over mix.

Piping batter into a donut pan

Fill each pan cavity of the donut pan about 2/3 full, so they do not overflow. My suggestion is to use the plastic bottle for a cleaner and more even filling, or you can also use the piping bag.

Icing donuts

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the top of the donuts bounces when you touch. Let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes before removing. Then cool completely on a wire rack.

How to Make Icing for Baked Donuts

For the donuts, we have a thick glaze or icing, which is easy to apply and kind of drapes down the sides as long as your icing is not too thin or too thick. Afterward, get creative and decorate the donuts as you like.

Combine the powdered sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl. Then add the milk in little by little and food coloring, if you are using it. You need it to be runny, but not so much that it drips off. It should have a thick consistency.

You may use a piping bag or a plastic squeeze bottle to add the icing. Pipe the icing clockwise and leave them to set.

Melt your chocolate in 20-second bursts in the microwave or on the stove over a pan of hot water. Once melted, add a few drops of food coloring and mix well.

Place your donuts on parchment paper and drizzle a bit of melted chocolate into the pattern of your choice.

Add sprinkles and edible glitter to your drizzled icing right away before it hardens.

Note: The consistency of the icing can be adjusted by adding in extra milk or powdered sugar depending on if it is too thick or too thin.

Pretty in pink or blue or whatever color you choose. The simple decorations are easy but make the donuts so elegant and appealing.

What is the Difference Between Old-Fashioned and Buttermilk Donuts?

Pink donut on a plate

The difference between an old-fashioned donut and a buttermilk donut is nothing really. The difference between an old-fashioned donut and a regular donut is more pronounced as old-fashioned donuts are cake donuts.

Regular donuts are made with yeast dough. Both are fried in a donut shop but now you can make a donut at home with the invention of the silicone pan or conventional donut pan.
