What Ingredients are Needed for Pigs in a Blanket

Ingredients for pigs in a blanket.

This recipe differs from others a little because it uses an air fryer instead of an oven. This allows you to cook more food in less time! Plus, the air fryer adds that flakey, crispy, straight-from-the-fryer texture that everyone loves without adding unnecessary oil or calories.

Another fantastic thing about my easy air fryer pigs recipe is that it’s pretty simple. This allows ample room for culinary creativity! Use your favorite spices like paprika or rosemary, or add cheeses like cheddar and parmesan to add some personality and extra flavor.

We Love This Recipe Because It’s…

  • Perfect for parties, as a fun snack, or in school lunches
  • Easily paired with your favorite dipping sauces
  • Made completely in the air fryer—no need to turn on the oven or stovetop
  • Easy to store, freeze and reheat

Ingredients

Lil’ Smokies – Flavorful, smoked finger sausages. Can be easily swapped out for your favorite plant-based or vegan sausages.

Pillsbury Crescent Rolls – The flakey, buttery blanket of pastry dough that’s wrapped around the “pigs”.

Butter – salted, gives the dough a perfectly golden bake.

Oregano & Basil – a little dash in the butter mixture adds a ton of aromatic flavor.

Condiments – ketchup, BBQ sauce, mustard, honey mustard, ranch, cheese sauce, and more.

How to Make Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket

Preheat the air fryer to 400F.

Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice your crescent dough into 32 thin triangles.

Roll one triangle of dough around each smoked sausage. Set aside.

In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, oregano, and basil. Spread this mixture over the top of the prepped pigs in a blanket.

Place the sausages in the air fryer basket of your air fryer and cook until flakey and golden brown. Air fry for 3 to 4 minutes or until the crescent top is light brown. Using tongs turn each of them over and bake for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the air fryer.

As air fryers vary hugely, you will know yours best for exact cook times. Serve and enjoy with your favorite condiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make pigs in a blanket with cheese?

Yes! Before wrapping the pastry dough around the Lil’ Smokies, wrap your favorite cheese around the sausage. The easiest cheeses to do this with are American, Brie, or Swiss. You could also add a little garnish of shredded cheese to the top of the pigs, about 2 minutes before baking time is over, for added crunch.

How do I make pigs in a blanket without crescent rolls?

I recommend using your favorite homemade roll or pizza dough recipe. Plus, this gives you the opportunity to make these pigs in a blanket gluten-free! Store-bought puff pastry would also work in a pinch.

Can I make pigs in a blanket in the oven?

Yes! Prepare the sausages as normal and bake in a 375°F oven for 12-15 minutes.

How to Store and Reheat Pigs in a Blanket

You can store these in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze unbaked pigs in a single layer on a baking sheet for at least 2 hours. Once frozen solid, transfer the sausages to a ziplock bag or airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 2 months.

To reheat, place the chilled sausages in the microwave for 40 seconds or in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 390°F. You can also pop them in the oven for 2-3 minutes at 375°F. Add more time if needed or if cooking frozen pigs.

Serving Suggestions

Wanting to make this quick dish a well-rounded meal? These are some great sides to go with your air fryer pigs in a blanket:

  • You can never go wrong with a fresh fruit or veggie tray to add nutrients to your dish.
  • Play on the fun nostalgic aspect of this dish by serving it with other comfort foods like mac n’ cheese, mashed potatoes, or green bean casserole.
  • Create a smorgasbord of finger foods by pairing these pigs in a blanket with deviled eggs, potato wedges, or pinwheels.
  • Some sauces that pair well with these pigs in a blanket include marinara, ketchup, honey mustard, ranch, barbecue, and beer cheese.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • You will want to work fast once the crescent rolls are cut because they turn warm and soft pretty easily. I like to work with one tube of crescent roll dough at a time.
  • Looking to take these pigs in a blanket on the go? They can be enjoyed at room temperature, or try packing them up in a tin foil pouch or warm thermos.
  • Looking to stay within a budget? You can use cut-up hot dogs instead of little smokies for your “pigs”.
