What Goes on a Prime Rib Sandwich?
All you need are those prime rib leftovers, and you are off to the races in making this incredibly delicious sandwich. This is a treat and something that you won’t have all the time, but you want to make it as good as you can, and we have listed all the ingredients to make your sandwich the best.
You could crack open a package of au jus to make with this sandwich, too, but you don’t really need it. You also could alter this somewhat with horseradish sauce, Dijon mustard, roasted garlic and more. I like to use canola oil for this recipe so that the prime rib shines without too many other flavors. Make it your own, or try our simple version that will really knock your socks off.
Ingredients
12 oz. Prime rib, pre-cooked and thinly sliced
½ tsp Kosher salt
½ tsp Freshly ground pepper
1 Yellow onion, thinly sliced
4 tsp Canola oil (divided)
6 slices Provolone cheese
1 baguette cut in half and sliced ¾ through
2 Tbsp Butter, softened
1 tsp Garlic, Minced
4 Tbsp Mayonnaise
How to Make Prime Rib Sandwiches
Have you ever wondered how do you reheat prime rib for sandwiches? Let me walk you through this for an amazing sandwich; it will take about 30 minutes tops. Next time you splurge on a prime rib, buy a little bit bigger of a roast to make some of these sandwiches the next day. One bite of the sandwich and you will be in heaven.
Slice the baguette in half and then horizontally 3/4 of the way through with a bread knife.
Thinly slice the prime rib if needed and the onion.
In a small bowl, combine the 2 tbsp of butter with the 1 tsp of minced garlic.
Spread the garlic butter onto one-half of the sliced baguette halves and spread the mayonnaise on the other half. Set aside. This is the perfect combination of flavor and creaminess for this sandwich.
Add 2 tsp canola oil to a large skillet, add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the onions are perfectly caramelized. Transfer them to a bowl and set them aside.
Add the remaining 2 tsp of canola oil to the skillet, then add the sliced prime rib to the skillet. Allow to heat through and brown slightly, don’t overcook. Season with Kosher salt and pepper.
When browned, add back the caramelized onions to the skillet.
Divide the roast beef and onions into 2 even portions in the skillet. Top each with 3 slices of provolone cheese and turn off the heat allowing the cheese to melt without continuing to cook the beef and onions. You can use a lid if you need to.
One at a time, place the baguette on top of the cheese beef portion, and using a spatula, scrap the cheesy beef into the baguette as you turn it over. Repeat with the second baguette.
Serve immediately.
Can you use Prime Rib for Philly Cheesesteak?
Absolutely you can use prime rib for a cheesesteak sandwich, and this is the path that we took but omitted the peppers, so the meat has more room to shine. We kept it simple too with the garlic butter and mayo, keeping again to the traditional cheesesteak, but you can make it your own with horseradish cream, etc.
This is a hearty feast and one that you won’t have all the time, so indulge and enjoy it. Serve it alongside a Caesar salad, garden salad, or fries, and see the smiles you will get. You can divide the baguette down into smaller sandwiches to feed more of your family if you like or build more sandwiches if you are lucky to have lots of leftovers.
