Teriyaki Skillet Burgers are a great switch-up to a traditional burger on a bun. When the weather is nasty outside, it is great to cook burgers on the stove. Cooked up with portobellos and onions, this makes a hearty meal served with fries and a salad, but one your whole family will dig into.

Want more easy beef dishes? Try our Homemade Hamburger Helper, Instant Pot Lasagna, or Easy Beef Taco Salad. All of these are great weeknight meals!

This is a burger recipe we have made for probably 20 years or more and was one of our favorites over the years as it is easy and delicious. Luscious sirloin burgers get even more flavor with the sweet fried onions and juicy portobello, never mind the simple addition of teriyaki sauce for another amped-up boost of interest.

Look at that picture; I know you want to run to the grocery store to get all the fixin’s right now!!

Grab that knife and fork and dig right in. You will be loving the flavor boost this meal has; so satisfying, and kids will gobble it down with the slightly sweet teriyaki sauce. You will love how easy these burgers are to make.

What are in Teriyaki Skillet Burgers?

Ingredients for Teriyaki Skillet Burgers.

Pretty simple ingredients. You can use freshly made burgers, but the timing for this recipe is for using frozen burgers, and they work like a charm; plus, how easy is that? You could make homemade burgers and freeze them too. The burger patties can be made with ground beef or ground chuck also.

The portobellos add a nice touch, and they won’t leave you wanting a bun with this burger. This really isn’t low carb as the teriyaki will have sugar in it, but I find it is not as filling, and you can fit in a healthy salad too.

This meal can be made in under 30 minutes plus with only a few ingredients, 5 actually plus salt and pepper. Throw your fries in the oven to bake while you cook the burgers. An easy bagged salad will finish the dinner off nicely.

Ingredients

½ sweet onion, thinly sliced

4 Portobello mushrooms, sliced 1/4 inch thick

2 Tbsp butter

4 frozen 6 oz sirloin burgers

1/3 cup teriyaki sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

How do you Cook Burgers in a Skillet?

These burgers can be made in either a regular fry pan or a cast iron skillet. Either way will give you a restaurant-quality meal. They cook up quickly, only needing a few minutes on each side. With the burgers cooked on high, your cook times are greatly reduced. With a fast prep and about 15 minutes of cook time, these burgers will be on the table in no time.

Place a large skillet on the stovetop on high heat and melt the butter; immediately add the frozen burgers and cook for 2 minutes, then turn the burgers.

Scatter the onion and mushrooms around the burgers.

After 2 minutes, salt and pepper the burgers and turn the burgers again. Gently press to fit into the pan.

Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking for 4 minutes, stirring the onion and mushrooms frequently.

Flip the burgers again and cook for 4 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the burgers reach 160 degrees F. Continue to stir the onions and mushrooms often.

Return the heat to high and add the teriyaki sauce. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes.

Remove the burgers from the skillet and plate. Spoon the mushrooms and onions over the burgers.

Serve with a large green salad and fries. Enjoy! I know you will if you are a beef lover.

At What Temperature is a Burger Cooked?

I like to use our handy and accurate instant-read thermometer to get an accurate read. The safe range for a cooked burger is the temperature of 160 – 165F. The best thermometer on the market, in my opinion, is from Thermoworks. Their new Thermapen One is accurate and super fast. Only a few seconds are needed to get the temperature of your burger.

How Long Does it Take to Cook a Burger on the Skillet?

Skillet burgers in a fry pan.

With this recipe, we are cooking the burgers at high heat, and they go from frozen to cooked quickly. We also have the additional time it takes to cook the onion and the portobello, but to just cook a burger, here is a guide from Taste of Home that you can follow.

How Long to Pan-Fry Burgers

Lastly, here is a guide for the cooking time and temperature for 1-in. burger patties; again, I want to emphasize that it is recommended to cook your burger to 160-165 F, but many like a rarer burger than that. Being from Canada, we almost always see our burgers cooked to a well done, but watching cooking shows, I see everything from medium-rare upwards. This can be achieved if you use single-sourced meat and have it freshly ground but using ground beef is not advisable.

  • Medium-rare (warm, red center): 6 minutes, or 130 to 135°
  • Medium (warm, pink center): 7 to 8 minutes, or 140 to 145°
  • Medium-well (hot, slightly pink center): 9 minutes, or 150 to 155°
  • Well done (brown all the way through): 10 minutes, or 160 to 165°
