How Do You Spice Up Your Rice Krispie Treats?

Ingredients for Layered Rice Krispies Squares

Take these delicious treats to another level with simple additions.

By taking your standard marshmallows, butter, and Rice Krispies and adding in more flavor from red velvet cake mix and blueberry Jello as we did in this Layered Rice Krispie Squares recipe, you have a whole new treat to enjoy and share. There are also many other ideas you can do.

We made gorgeous Valentine’s Day Heart Shaped Rice Krispies Treats using white chocolate and sprinkles.

You can also add other flavors to the cereal treats like peanut butter, browned butter, pumpkin pie spice, crumbled bacon, chocolate in the form of chocolate chips, candy bars, Nutella, and more. You can make them into S’mores Rice Krispies Treats; really, the flavors are only limited by your imagination. Try experimenting; it is not hard nor expensive to do so.

How To Make Chewy Layered Rice Krispies Squares

Pretty standard ingredients that you will find at any grocery store. Red velvet cake mix is made by all the big brands now, and who doesn’t have Jello on their shelves.

Want a different color combination, then just change up the jello flavor. You can make a pretty rainbow of colors with some experimentation.

BAKER’S NOTES:

  • SKILLS
    • Wash the saucepan in between each layer or use separate pans.
    • Using a fork or rubber spatula that you coated with butter or cooking spray allows spreading the Rice Krispies even easier.

How To Cut Rice Krispie Treats Into Squares

Cut Rice Krispies treats

You may be tempted to cut these right away but don’t!! Let them cool and set for the full 30 minutes. They will be so much easier to slice then.

Remove them from the pan and place on a cutting board. Eye them up to see how many you would like. For us, we did 16, which seems to give you the right-sized treat.

When cutting any squares, start in the middle so you can easily divide them. Slice with a sharp knife, and you have it. Wonderful Rice Krispies squares!!

Why Are My Rice Crispy Treats Hard?

A bite taken out of a Rice Krispies treat

Simply following our recipe you will not have hard rice Krispies treats, but there are some precautions during and after they are made to stick to.

Don’t try to use that bag of stale hard marshmallows you found in the back of the pantry, as you will have stale tasting, hard rice Krispies treats too.

Don’t have your heat too high after the butter is melted. You want to melt the marshmallows low and slow. Heat is the big issue that will get you hard Rice Krispies cereal treats. Go low and slow, and you will be rewarded with delicious, soft, and chewy treats!

Rice Krispies aren’t made to last, so eat them up! After a couple of days, Rice Krispies start to lose their freshness, so they are best eaten quickly. Who can resist having those around anyway!!

Plus, you will need to store them in an air-tight container so that they don’t dry out. I also find that the refrigerator keeps them a bit longer too.

And add-ins just make them even more enjoyable. Get creative and get the rice cereal out of the cupboard!
