What are Dog Cookies Made of?

Recipe Ingredients.

Just like with everything else, treats should be given in moderation. Here is some additional important information on the ingredients in these dog biscuits. If you are at all unsure, please consult a veterinarian before giving these and any treats.

Is the dry milk powder safe?

Many dogs can tolerate dairy, but some are lactose intolerant. If you know the recipient’s dog has a sensitive stomach, it’s best to use the dairy-free variation (coconut milk powder) or omit the milk powder from the jar mix.

Recipe Ingredients

For the Jar Mix:

Whole wheat flour – This is a healthier alternative than AP flour for your pooch.

Rolled oats – Rolled oats add a nice crunchy touch to the cookies.

Peanut butter powder – This is awesome tasting, but it is essential that you get sugar-free and definitely xylitol-free, as this is extremely toxic to dogs and can be fatal!!

Dry milk powder – Some dogs may be sensitive to dairy products, and in that case, don’t give them these biscuits. You will probably know if your dog is sensitive if you have ever given them cheese or ice cream as a treat. Also see above for more information.

Ground flaxseed – This is perfect for a healthy addition to the cookies.

Wet Ingredients (for the gift recipient to add):

Eggs – This is used as a binder and also helps the cookies rise.

Warm water – Using warm water helps the powdered ingredients dissolve more easily. This creates a more cohesive dough that comes together easier. Cold water can cause the oil to harden and the powders to clump.

Canola or vegetable oil – This helps to moisten the treats and also to help bind or hold the cookies together.

Recipe Pro Tips

Tips

If the dough is overly sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it is manageable. You can also roll the dough between parchment paper to prevent sticking.

For extra crunch, after the 30-35 minute bake time, turn the oven off, crack the door open, and leave the biscuits on the baking sheet inside the oven to cool down completely. This process slowly dehydrates them, resulting in a more shelf-stable treat.
