How Do You Make Baked Strawberry Donuts?
This is a really simple recipe for strawberry doughnuts (or is it donuts?) that takes only a few ingredients. These ingredients are brought to the next level for a delicious, tender, mouthwatering pan of strawberry donuts.
Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray a donut pan with nonstick baking spray or grease it with oil.
In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the egg with sugar. Add now the wet ingredients, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla. Whisk until combined.
Add the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Fold in the chopped strawberries. You want to get little bursts of fresh strawberries in the batter but don’t chop the strawberries too large as then you will have difficulty piping or spooning them into your doughnut pans.
Use a spoon or a piping bag to fill donut cavities with batter 3/4 way full. I find piping is so much easier, but you have to use a large tip to get the strawberry pieces through.
Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before flipping the pans upside down over a wire rack to cool completely.
How to Make Strawberry Donut Icing
If you want to serve these donuts without the fresh strawberry glaze, one way to keep them moist is to brush with melted butter before storing them away. You could then sugar the tops and serve them plain, but I love this delicious and very easy glaze for the strawberry donuts. Just gives them one more layer of strawberry goodness.
For the glaze, using a fork, puree the diced strawberries until almost smooth. Add in the vanilla extract and powdered sugar, mix until combined. Add more powdered sugar, if needed, or add milk if the glaze is too thick.
Drizzle the glaze over the donuts, or dip them into the glaze. Serve the donuts at room temperature.
Do Baked Donuts Taste the Same as Fried?
Baked donuts have a different consistency than fried donuts. You don’t taste the oil, and you don’t have a crispy finish or a pillowy inside. Baked donuts are tender, moist and flavorful, though. They, of course, have less calories than their fried cousins, plus less mess that goes with frying.
A lot of fried donuts are also yeast-based to rise and give you that pillowy inside. Baked donuts are cakier using baking powder and are baked in a doughnut pan. They are different than fried but an amazing treat that you can make at home with little fuss.
They are also inexpensive to make where some specialty bake shops can charge a fortune for a donut.
