What is Pizza Chicken?

Are you getting confused with Chicken Pizza? This is the reverse of Chicken Pizza, where you use the chicken instead of a crust and top it the way you would a pizza. This Pizza Chicken Bake is a great gluten-free, low-carb, or Keto friendly meal as long as you don’t have lots of sugar in your tomato sauce, so watch for that.

Kids will go crazy for this Pizza Chicken Bake with all that pizza flavor. Parents will love the ease of this chicken recipe and also love an alternative to a carb pizza.

Depending on how much you would like, the size of the chicken breasts, or if there are smaller children, you will get 2-4 servings.

What is in Pizza Chicken?

Ingredients for pizza chicken.

These ingredients as very simple to find in any grocery store. Are you trying to eat a bit more health-conscious? Wanting your kids to eat better too? Then try this delicious alternative to pizza; it is a great family-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Boneless Skinless Chicken breasts pounded – You want these chicken breasts to be pounded out flat so you can put on more toppings. Plus, since they are so thin, they will cook quickly too.

Jarred pizza sauce – If you are wanting this to be on a keto diet, look for a pizza sauce that is low in sugar or doesn’t contain sugar. Otherwise, use your favorite pizza sauce.

Shredded mozzarella cheese – Grating your own cheese does take a bit longer, but it doesn’t contain any anti-caking agents and will melt a lot better.

Pizza pepperoni slices chopped – I like these chopped, so it is easier to slice the chicken afterward, or you can use tiny pepperoni slices if you can find them.

Grated Parmesan – Again, grating your own good quality Parmesan is the best.

Cherry tomatoes halved – These cherry tomatoes not only add flavor but appeal to the top of your chicken.

Fresh basil leaves, torn – Fresh basil just adds so much more flavor and greens up the dish with freshness.

Kosher salt and pepper to taste – Seasoning is always important, don’t forget it.

How to Make Pizza Chicken

This easy one-pan dinner is made in any baking dish or baking pan with sides. Cleanup is super easy if you use foil on the pan. Either way, spray the pan well with cooking spray with or without the foil.

In the short time this chicken takes to bake, you can whip up a salad. Dinner is served in under 30 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

Line a baking sheet with foil, spray with cooking spray, and set aside. This makes for fast cleanup, but it is optional.

Place the chicken breast between 2 sheets of wax paper and pound out until about ¼ inch thick.

Place the pounded-out chicken on the greased and foiled baking sheet and lightly season with salt and pepper.

Completely cover each chicken breast with pizza sauce.

Divide the mozzarella cheese, chopped pepperoni, and parmesan cheese between the 2 chicken breasts.

Cook for 14-16 minutes or until the chicken is done.

When the chicken is done, move the oven rack to the top and broil for 1 minute to brown the cheese.

Remove the chicken from the oven and sprinkle with cherry tomatoes and torn basil leaves.

Using a pizza cutter, slice the chicken and serve it with a salad if desired, or if you aren’t worried about carbs, try our Air Fryer Garlic Bread below; simply delicious!!

Recipe Pro Tips!

Here are some great tips, tricks, and information to make your dinner complete.

Because the chicken is pounded thin, there is no need to precook it as it will cook quickly in the oven.

Get good quality cheese, pepperoni, and pizza sauce. As mentioned above, although pre-shredded cheese is very convenient, it doesn’t melt as well as cheese that you have grated yourself. You will get that lovely cheese pull with a pizza mozzarella that you grate yourself.

Change up the toppings to your favorite pizza toppings; some suggestions are black olives, mushrooms, small diced bell peppers, onions, pineapple, ham, and different cheeses like feta. I love arugula too on a pizza after it comes out of the oven. Think of what you like on a pizza and use it here or just follow our easy recipe for a delicious outcome.

This is a fast meal as the chicken is cooked in under 20 minutes, and you have dinner on the table in under 30 minutes.
