Smoky, Sweet, Spicy Trio of Homemade BBQ Sauces

I created these sauces for you with the help of my new wonderful spice drawers. You can take your pick with the sauces. Smoky is great with steaks, sweet is gorgeous on ribs (we just had that last night and it was delish!), and spicy is kick ass on wings. You can find your favorite to slather on what you like. Think of the possibilities. Plus, Dad would love if you created a BBQ sauce in his honor for Father’s Day. It would be the perfect gift, and he will be in awe how wonderful these recipes are.

ShelfGenie pull-out shelves for spice drawer organization

Along with an entire pantry makeover, ShelfGenie improved my cupboard. What a transformation! This cupboard is right beside our stovetop, and used to just hold bowls. With the added two drawers for spices and then a pull-out shelf at the bottom, I have everything I need in one space. Before, my spices were in four different locations in the kitchen—which was not only a waste of time, but a big frustration. All of the bowls that I had in my cupboard now easily fit on the bottom shelf, with amazing access to the back of the cupboard. ShelfGenie has really changed my life.

Simple recipes for three different homemade BBQ sauces

I can see all my spices now in one location. It’s so much easier to see what goes together in recipes and what to add to my shopping list. I have everything in alphabetical order for easy searching as well.

ShelfGenie spice drawer with organized Glide-Out shelf

I am your average Joe when it comes to spices. My spices are all different brands, sizes, and shapes, but I want them all in one place. With my two drawers of spices, everything is stored in one simple location.

Spice drawer organization using ShelfGenie custom Solutions for existing cabinets

I have had spice drawers in other homes, and they frustrated me because they only housed certain sizes. The large jars had to go in a cupboard, or anything wider wouldn’t fit. With ShelfGenie , they are all in one place because the drawers are nice and deep, and everything is custom-made to your qualifications.

Smoky homemade BBQ Sauce recipe

For this Smoky BBQ Sauce, we used dried mustard, ancho chili powder, smoked paprika, freshly ground pepper, and cayenne. To give it that deep colour, we added liquid smoke, molasses, balsamic vinegar, dark brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce.

 Sweet homemade BBQ sauce recipe

Then we grabbed spices for this Sweet BBQ Sauce. We used dried mustard, sea salt, ancho chili peppers, crushed jalapeno peppers, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Then to sweeten the sauce, we used bourbon and honey!

Spicy homemade BBQ sauce recipe

For the Spicy BBQ Sauce, we relied heavily on the heat from cayenne pepper and cayenne pepper sauce. A traditional sweet paprika gives this its’ lovely colour too.

I think it’s time for me to upgrade to spice drawers since my spice racks are overflowing and some spice jars don’t even fit in my spice rack. I love a good sweet BBQ sauce so I can’t wait to try your recipe.

And if you use Worcerstershire sauce from the US, they are all gluten-free too! Canadian Worcestershire sauce has malt vinegar in it which is made from malted barley. I usually buy a couple of bottles of the stuff when we go to the US.
