This Creamed Cabbage recipe doesn’t just need to come out for St. Patrick’s Day as it is so amazing and so simple you will want to make this all the time. Cabbage seems never to be served on its own but in this recipe, it is a show stopper.

If you love cabbage, try these recipes, too! Our Roasted Cabbage with Blue Cheese Sauce is a home run of a dish, or try Haluski, which is fried cabbage and noodles. Gain a new love for cabbage, especially when it is fried or roasted.

What to serve with creamed cabbage?

For St. Patrick’s Day each year, we make this creamed cabbage and serve it with new little potatoes and corned beef. It is a meal that we so enjoy and get rave reviews from.

Corned Beef and Cabbage is one of our absolute favorite meals. We have it every St. Patrick’s Day with a green beer. Amber said it was one of the best things she had ever eaten. This is a must for anyone wanting to celebrate this holiday!!!

What is in Creamed Cabbage?

Ingredients for Creamed Cabbage.

Really simple ingredients yet the results are something amazing. Truly one of my favorite recipes.

Ingredients

Salted butter – This is what I always have on hand so I use this mainly for all cooking and baking too.

Salt – Make sure you have salted the dish well; we usually use Kosher salt.

Medium head of cabbage, cut into small wedges – Just a regular green cabbage works best for this recipe.

Light cream – No need for heavy cream with this recipe; I have always used a light cream or half and half.

Freshly ground pepper – This is the finishing touch to the cabbage; that is all that is needed to finish.

Melt butter in a large skillet. Add cabbage, cover, and saute until slightly browned or charred, about 4-5 min.

Carefully turn over and brown the other side, 3-4 min.

Add cream and heat until slightly thickened, 2 min. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

The cabbage turns so sweet when cooking it this way.

We always have this with a green beer, which is just Ken’s favorite beer with a few drops of green food coloring in it.

I buy the prepared corned beef and follow the directions on the package. After it is made, we broil it with the fatter side up until just slightly browned and crispy. Slice it up and serve with some new potatoes and the cabbage recipe below. Happy St. Paddy’s Day!!

Recipe Pro Tips!

Is this Cabbage Overdone?

No, this cabbage has the perfect char to bring out even more flavor and sweetness from the cabbage. If you have never tried it like this, you have to make it. Truly amazing with such few ingredients. The cabbage comes out very tender and is absolutely delicious with the cream drizzled on top for serving.

Can you Freeze Creamed Cabbage?

Technically, you can, but the results are subpar. If we have leftovers, creamed cabbage is still good the next day, with leftover corned beef and new potatoes. Excellent take-to-work lunch! Store any leftovers in an air-tight container.

This is one of our favorites too. If we have any leftovers, I love to make corned beef hash with a fried egg on top. I am also interested in the jalapeno popper recipe down below-another favorite!
