What is Monkey Bread?

Monkey Bread or Pull-Apart Bread are the two common names for this bread. Monkey bread came about as you would pluck the little sections of bread off as a monkey would. It is also known as plucking cake or bubble bread.

Monkey bread is a soft, sweet, sticky bread that makes a great treat for breakfast. Perfect for the holidays when you want something a little more special. It consists of soft-baked dough balls that are stuck together with a sugary caramel and then pulled apart to enjoy.

What is in Monkey Bread?

Ingredients for Air Fryer Holiday Monkey Bread

What is in monkey bread, and in particular, this Air Fryer Holiday Monkey Bread? This quick and easy monkey bread is made with biscuit dough and cinnamon rolls, both of which are very simple to find at your grocery store.

Also needed for a great holiday touch are dried cranberries and cranberry sauce, which are also readily available, especially for the holidays. Plus, just a few other simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

Ingredients

  • Pillsbury biscuits
  • Pillsbury cinnamon rolls
  • Butter, melted
  • Dark brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Cinnamon
  • Cranberries
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Powdered Sugar

How to Make Monkey Bread

This monkey bread is simple to make, as I have said. The monkey bread tastes as you slaved away for hours making fresh dough, but keep it your secret that it was so easy. The brown sugar and butter mixture that is poured on makes the ooey-gooey delightfulness of this treat. It is best served warm or at least at room temperature.

Preheat the air fryer to 330°F for 5 minutes.

Remove biscuit pieces from the can. Cut each biscuit into quarter sections and roll it into balls. Repeat with cinnamon rolls. Set icing aside.

Place dried cranberries into a shallow pan. Roll biscuit balls into the cranberries to allow them to stick to the biscuits. Press gently to adhere.

Spray a 7 or 8” bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray (whichever fits well in your air fryer). Add a layer of the biscuits to the bottom, then a layer of the cinnamon rolls. Top with 1/4 of the cranberry sauce and repeat.

In a small mixing bowl, melt the butter. Stir in brown sugar, honey, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into the bundt pan. Cover with foil.

Place into the air fryer and cook for 24 minutes.

Remove and let cool. Flip upside down onto a serving plate and drizzle (you may need to heat) the included icing over the top. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and garnish with cranberries. Enjoy!

For The Oven

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Bake on the center rack for 35 minutes.

If you don’t have a bundt pan, the monkey bread can be made in a loaf pan or cake pan.

Can you Make this Bread Ahead of Time?

Yes, you can make this bread ahead of time! Make the recipe accordingly. Roll into balls and place into the prepared pan as instructed, then cover with plastic wrap and foil and refrigerate overnight. Proceed to bake as you would above, either in the air fryer or oven.

How do you Store Monkey Bread?

How do you store monkey bread? You really need to keep your bread at room temperature for the best freshness, and also if you intend to grab a snack at any time in the day.

This bread is best eaten within a few days of making. Ours disappears very quickly without an issue. It is hard to store this bread in an air-tight container, so I, therefore, recommend wrapping it in plastic wrap and tin foil, or better yet, store it in a zipped plastic bag. This will maintain the freshness and moisture and keep the bread delicious for two to three days.

Can I Freeze Monkey Bread?

Taking a slice from a monkey bread.

Can you freeze monkey bread after baking? Once your monkey bread is baked, let it cool completely, then you can also freeze it. If wrapped well, it will store in your freezer for up to 3 months.

Frozen monkey bread should be thawed in the refrigerator overnight before reheating. Just leave it covered on your counter until defrosted.

Can I reheat my pull-apart bread again? Yes, if you would like to have the bread warm again, simply heat it on a baking dish or baking tray in a low and slow oven of 250°F until heated through. A toaster oven works well for this, also.

Or you can microwave individual servings in 30-second intervals until heated through. Careful when microwaving, as the bread can be very hot and also not heat uniformly.
