These Halloween Bat Cupcakes are adorably haunting to celebrate with. This Halloween treat recipe is extremely simple, using both store-bought cake mix and store-bought icing.

If you would like to make the chocolate cupcakes from scratch, you can use our delicious Milk Chocolate Sheet Pan recipe and our homemade Chocolate Buttercream recipe too! But trust me, it is okay to cheat a bit and use store-bought to make these easy Halloween cupcakes. Want more frightfully gorgeous Halloween treats then try our 38 Frightful Halloween Recipes, Halloween Apples, or our Halloween Popcorn.

What Supplies Will I Need to Make Halloween Bat Cupcakes?

To make this cute cupcake recipe, you will need:

  • Cupcake liners
    • We used an all black cupcake liner, but you could add some extra Halloween flair or another festive color, such as orange!
  • Cupcake pan
    • We love our USA cupcake pan
  • Mixing bowl and measuring tools
  • Serrated knife
    • We used a Henckels bread knife
  • Piping bag and star tip

How to Make Halloween Bat Cupcakes

A large bite taken from a chocolate bat Halloween cupcake

Grab the kids to help make these easy cupcakes and have some Halloween fun! We have always loved making cute Halloween treats.

  1. Make chocolate cake cupcakes according to box instructions and allow to cool completely.
  2. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes with a large star tip to create a soft swirl of frosting on top of each cupcake.
  3. Cut 24 oreos in half using a serrated knife. Place an oreo half on each side of the frosting swirl, securing them by tucking into the frosting for the bat wings.
  4. In between the two oreo wings, and top center of the swirl, place a pair of eyes, just tucking the bottoms into the frosting to secure.
  5. Have a spooky, batty Halloween!

Chef Notes:

Because different boxes will yield different amounts of cupcakes, the exact yield and baking time will most likely differ, which is why this recipe is easily adaptable. For example, if the box only yields 15 cupcakes, the baker only needs to cut 15 Oreos in half.

How Should I Store These Halloween Bat Cupcakes?

Chocolate Bat Cupcakes on a plate

If the current temperature allows, store the cupcakes at room temperature for about 2 days. If it’s too hot in your climate, you may want to consider keeping them in the fridge; however, please note that a long duration in the fridge will cause them to go stale faster.

Tips & Tricks for Decorating These Oreo Halloween Bat Cupcakes

How can I get a clean cut for the Oreo wings?

Using a sharp serrated knife, gently saw back and forth on an oreo placed on an even surface. While you can slice the oreo with any knife, the gentle sawing motion (and a sharp knife!) were the trick to getting a clean cut every time. Using a standard chef’s knife will work, but we found that it would often crumble one-half of the cookie.

My frosting is too soft and won’t hold the cookies, what can I do ?

After swirling the frosting on top of the cupcakes, pop them in the fridge for five minutes. After they’ve had some time to chill and firm up a bit, take them out one at a time to insert the wings and eyes. Place back in the fridge while assembling the rest of the cupcakes. By the time they’re all assembled, they should hold better.
