Homemade Lime Sherbet is a refreshing, creamy frozen dessert bursting with bright citrus flavor. This easy lime sherbet recipe combines fresh lime juice, sugar, and dairy to create a smooth, tangy treat that’s lighter than ice cream but creamier than sorbet.

Do you like making frozen treats? If yes, then try our Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches or our Cherry Cheesecake Popsicles.

Homemade Lime Sherbet Ingredients

Ingredients.

With its zesty taste, this homemade lime sherbet is perfect for hot days, summer gatherings, or a simple make-ahead dessert. The balance of sweet and tart makes every bite crisp, cool, and incredibly refreshing.

Ingredients

Lime juice – Freshly squeezed is best.

Sugar – You can easily adjust the sugar to taste. We use granulated sugar for this.

Lime zest – Optional, for more lime flavor.

Salt – I used Kosher salt for this recipe.

Whole milk or heavy cream – This is used for a creamier texture. It is still very light and icy, unlike the amount you would use in ice cream.

Water– This expands all the ingredients.

Make the Lime Base

In a mixing bowl, combine the lime juice, sugar, lime zest (if using), salt and water. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved. This may take a few minutes.

Add the Milk/Cream

Adding milk.

Mix the lime juice mixture with the milk or heavy cream. Stir until well combined.

Prepare the Mixture for Freezing

Lime mixture and a container.
Pouring the mixture into the container.

Pour the mixture into a shallow container that is freezer-safe (a metal or glass dish works well). (Your container, measuring 15cm x 12cm, is approximately 5.9 inches x 4.7 inches.)

Freeze the Sherbet

Frozen in container.

Place the container in the freezer. After about 1-2 hours, stir the mixture with a fork to break up any ice crystals that form. Return it to the freezer.

Repeat this process every 30 minutes for about 2-3 hours, until the sherbet is firm but still scoopable.

Recipe Pro Tips

 Tips

  • To enhance the flavor, consider using a little bit of sweetened condensed milk along with the whole milk.
  • If you want a vegan option, substitute the dairy with a plant-based milk, like coconut milk or almond milk.

Storage

  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • If sherbet has completely melted and sat out for a long time before refreezing, it’s safest to discard it.
  • Sherbet lasts a long time frozen, but flavor and texture decline over time. Proper storage helps keep it fresh and creamy longer.
