What Ingredients do you need to make Marshmallow Snowman?

Recipe Ingredients

Nothing is too complicated here. Just regular items you should be able to get at any craft or grocery store.

Ingredients

Large marshmallows and Mini marshmallows – You need the two different sizes: the mini marshmallows for the melted body and the large ones for the head.

Chocolate chips* and White chocolate chips* – See the FAQs section for more tips on the chocolate and working with it.

Coconut oil – This is needed for working with the white chocolate and is necessary, but you can also substitute canola or vegetable oil.

Orange food dye – You can also use 1 drop red + 5 drops yellow.

Peanut Butter Cups – Using the mini is best and only work with a half of the peanut butter cup.

Cooking spray – This is used so the marshmallows won’t stick to the baking tray and parchment.

Equipment

Simple items that you probably have around the house. I have a link for piping bags above if you want to use those.

How do you Make an Edible Snowman

Small marshmallows in groups on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Large and small marshmallows piled.
Marshmallows slightly melted.

Preheat your oven to 275°F.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly mist with cooking spray.

Create 6 piles of 16 mini marshmallows on each baking sheet. Place 1 large marshmallow in the center of each pile.

Bake for 5–6 minutes, just until the marshmallows puff and melt together.

Do not overbake, or they will start to deflate and wrinkle. Won’t ruin the taste, but it won’t look as pretty!

Orange chocolate in a bowl.
Chocolate in piping bags.

While the marshmallows are baking, melt the chocolate chips: Microwave for 20 seconds, stir. Repeat 1–2 more times until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag.

Add 1-2 drops orange food dye and ½ teaspoon coconut oil to the white chocolate chips. Melt in the same way, stirring between intervals. Transfer to another piping bag and set aside.

Remove the marshmallows from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 6–8 minutes.

Unwrap the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and carefully cut each one in half. Each half will be used as a hat.

Snip a tiny opening in each piping bag (about the size of a pencil tip). Pipe: two eyes, a pebble mouth, a carrot nose, and stick arms.

Place a small dab of melted chocolate on top of the marshmallow and press on half of a Reese’s cup to secure the hat.*

Allow the decorations to set for about 10 minutes before removing from the baking sheet.

Use a silicone spatula to gently lift each snowman and place into a mug of hot cocoa. You can make them with or without the hat. Enjoy!

Recipe Pro Tips

Melted Marshmallow Snowman on a baking sheet and in cocoa.

FAQS

  • To keep chocolate in the piping bags from hardening, place the bags in a mug of hot tap water. If the tips are already cut, put each piping bag into a sandwich bag first, then place into the warm water. Avoid reheating the bags in the microwave.
  • Black and orange writing icing can be used instead of melted chocolate.
  • Little orange candies (like a sliced orange gummy) make adorable noses.
  • Reese’s hat can weigh it down a bit, so it works better if the Reese’s can be placed directly over the melted marshmallows rather than hanging off the side.
  • For smaller mugs, you can use 12–14 mini marshmallows per snowman.
  • Using coconut oil is important to get the right consistency when mixing food dye with the white chocolate; it will not work without it. Canola or vegetable oil can also be used.

Storage

  • Use an airtight container. Place the decorated snowmen in a container with a tight-fitting lid to keep them from drying out. Place wax paper or saran on top to keep fresher.
  • Handle with care. Be gentle to avoid knocking off any decorations.
  • Store at room temperature. Keep the container in a cool, dry place to prevent the marshmallows from getting sticky for up to 7 days.
