These Seven Layer Bars are a wonderful treat for the holidays but can be enjoyed any time for a picnic, backyard gathering, game day snack and more. There are layers of chocolate, nuts, butterscotch, coconut, all the flavors that are loved in this bar.

Do you love a great bar and want more? One of our most popular recipes is for our Rhubarb Dream Bars; they are heavenly!! Also try our amazing Chocolate Cherry Magic Bars, they have all the ingredients of a Cherry Blossom chocolate.

What are the Ingredients in Seven Layer Bars?

Ingredients.

Here are the seven layers in more detail. They are all simple ingredients that you can find in your grocery store. They are also called layered Magic Bars if you come across that name.

Recipe Ingredients

Butter melted – This is added to the graham crackers.

Graham cracker crumbs – With the butter, this forms the bottom crust to hold everything together. No need for added sugar here.

Fancy flake coconut – I use an unsweetened version of this coconut, as this recipe can get very sweet.

Semi sweet chocolate chips – Again, I like to cut down a bit on the sugar and use these chips instead of milk chocolate.

Butterscotch chips – I find these quite sweet also, so I have reduced the amount.

Walnuts – They go perfectly with the other ingredients and add a necessary crunch. You can substitute almonds or pecans.

Eagle Brand Condensed Milk – This holds all the layers together so the dessert can be cut into squares once baked.

How to make Old Fashioned Layer Bars

Top with the coconut.

Then add the semi sweet chips, followed by the butterscotch. Sprinkle the walnuts overtop.

Ready for the oven.
Baked and sliced bars in a pan.

Pour the condensed milk over all.

Bake for 25-30 min. at 350F or until just lightly browned; do not overbake. Let cool and cut into squares. What could be easier than that?

Recipe Pro Tips!

Bars on a plate.

Can You Refrigerate Seven Layer Bars?

Yes, I like them refrigerated better as they are chewier and firmer, but you can leave them at room temperature also. They need to be stored in an air-tight container either way. On the counter, they will last 4-5 days, and in the refrigerator, for at least a week.

Can Seven Layer Bars Be Frozen?

Yes, you can freeze these old-fashioned squares in an air-tight container for up to 2 months. The best part is that they are great frozen, too!!

Variations

The sky is the limit to the different kinds of bars you can make. Change the nuts up, add fruit like cranberries, raisins, dried cherries, use an Oreo crust to give you more chocolate flavor, drizzle with chocolate, or simplify it down to just coconut and chocolate. You decide what you would like to add.
