Everything Bagel Seasoning became popular in the 70’s in NY bagel shops; today, it is a staple in every kitchen due to its delicious umami flavor and crunchy texture. I love having a homemade version on hand to add to salads, eggs, roasted vegetables, or meat. Wherever you use it, it will make your meal better every time.

Do you need some recipes on how to use this seasoning? Then you should try these ones: Everything Bagel Dip, Everything Bagel Recipe, and Everything Bagel Turkey Cheddar Crescent Rolls.

Where Did Everything Bagel Seasoning Originate?

The most commonly credited creator is David Gussin, who has said he invented the everything bagel around 1980 while working at a bagel shop in New York. According to his story, leftover seed and spice toppings were mixed together and baked onto a bagel and the “everything” flavor was born.

Why I Love This Recipe

  • So easy to make
  • Great with so many recipes
  • Nice to have on hand
  • Keeps well for 6 months to 1 year
  • Sprinkle on top of cream cheese for a quick appetizer

Everything Bagel Seasoning Ingredients

Everything bagel seasoning ingredients.

Ingredients

White and black sesame seeds – Using the two of them is traditional and adds color, but the seasoning still works great with only one of them.

Poppy seeds – These add a delicate crunch with a slightly nutty flavor.

Dried minced garlic and dried minced onion – These provide the signature sharp aroma to the seasoning.

Sea salt flakes – You can also use coarse kosher salt. Those types of salt provide the best balance between flavor and texture. If you use a fine salt, it may overpower the seasoning too much.

How to use Everything Bagel Seasoning

Everything bagel seasoning is very versatile as it doesn’t have a strong flavor.

Here are some popular uses:

  • On bagels (of course!) with cream cheese
  • Sprinkled on avocado toast
  • Mixed into scrambled eggs or omelets
  • On roasted veggies or potatoes
  • On chicken, fish, or tofu
  • Mixed into dips and salads

Storing Everything but the Bagel Seasoning

This homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning recipe can last months when properly stored. Keep it in an airtight jar or spice cellar by the stove; if stored, place in a cool and dry place for up to 6 months to 1 year.

Does Everything Bagel Seasoning have salt?

Yes, our recipe includes salt, as it’s meant to be used as a complete seasoning blend for different meals. But you can definitely omit it if desired.
If using fine salt instead of coarse/flaky, reduce to ¼ teaspoon so it doesn’t overpower the blend.
