Recipe Ingredients.

This spooky ice cream recipe is super easy to make and have great success with. It only takes a few easy-to-find ingredients and no special equipment. Let’s dive in!

Recipe Ingredients

Heavy Whipping Cream – Whipping cream or heavy cream is needed to give the ice cream its creamy quality. It will give it a different mouth feel, though, than traditional ice cream.

Sweetened Condensed Milk – This adds the perfect sweetness to the ice cream without making it too sweet.

Vanilla Extract – This ice cream is excellent served with just vanilla flavoring. You can, if you like, flavor the ice cream with flavors that coordinate with their colors: purple – grape, orange – orange, green – lime. Or you could flavor it with candy floss or bubble gum flavors, too.

Purple Green and Orange Gel Food Color – This is the best food color combination for a fun Halloween ice cream.

Equipment Needed

No special machines or equipment is needed to make this ice cream, which makes it so popular to make.

2 tablespoon Ice Cream Scoop – To scoop out the spooky Halloween ice cream with.

Large bowl – To mix the ice cream ingredients together.

Hand mixer – You can use a hand mixer or a stand mixer, which ever you have.

3 smaller bowls – Used to divide the ice cream and color it.

9 inch by 5 inch loaf pan – Used to freeze the ice cream; you just need a small deep pan to layer and then scoop. A loaf pan works the best.

Coloring the ice cream.

Start with beating the heavy whipping cream, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla into thick peaks in your large mixing bowl with your handheld mixer, for about 5 minutes.

Then separate the mixture into 3 bowls, as evenly as you can without measuring.

Add the purple food coloring to one bowl, the green food dye to the second bowl, and the orange food dye to the third bowl. Then stir each bowl separately to create the desired colors.

Add the colored ice cream mixture to the bottom of the loaf pan using the ice cream scoop. 8 scoops should fit in a single layer; alternate the colors as you wish.

Then add a second and third layer and fill in the top layer with any remaining mixture.

Set in the freezer for at least 6 hours, or until thoroughly frozen.

Once frozen, thaw slightly before scooping and serving.

FAQs

What is the best way to store this ice cream?

Store in the freezer, covered, in a freezer-safe container.

Is this ice cream like soft serve or hard ice cream?

This ice cream is soft when thawed, not as soft as soft serve, and not as hard as hard ice cream.

Do I have to add the food dye?

This is up to you; it tastes the same whether or not you add the food dye. However, the coloring of this ice cream is what makes it Halloween-themed. Otherwise, you simply have a sweet vanilla ice cream.

What flavor is this ice cream?

This ice cream has a sweet and rich vanilla flavor. The key here, though, is you can flavor the different colors if you like.

What should I top this ice cream with when serving?

Add any of your desired ice cream toppings, such as sprinkles or whipped cream, to this ice cream! It’s Halloween, so pull out the scary sprinkles.

How long does this ice cream last?

In an air-tight container, this ice cream will last 3-6 months, but ours never comes close to that as it is all gobbled down quickly.
