What Ingredients are in Steelhead Trout?

Ingredients
Honey – This is used for the sweetness in the sauce.
Low sodium soy sauce – You can use regular soy sauce if you prefer.
Lemon juice – This adds the a nice tart flavor and brings the whole dish alive.
Pinch of red chili flakes – Gives a little heat to the dish and cuts the sweet.
Olive oil, divided – This is used to cook the fish and the garlic.
Steelhead trout filets – Ideally, this should be about 6 oz. each with skin on. Make sure they are well patted dry.
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper – to taste.
Garlic – Adds that lovely flavor to the honey mixture.
Lemon – Perfect garnish when it is thinly sliced.
How to Make This Recipe

In a small saucepan, add the honey, soy sauce, lemon juice and red chili flakes and whisk to combine. Bring to a boil and simmer gently, uncovered, until slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes.
Pat the steelhead trout filets dry using a paper towel.
In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tbsp of olive oil. When the oil is hot but not smoking, add the steelhead trout skin side up. Season with Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.

Cook the filets until the flesh is seared, about 2 -3 minutes. Flip the filets over and add the remaining tbsp. of olive oil and the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds to a minute.
Then, add the honey mixture and sliced lemons and continue to cook, basting the trout with the sauce until the filets are cooked to your liking. They should be flaky and cooked through; be careful not to overcook them.
Spoon the sauce over the filets and serve over rice with a side of steamed vegetables.
Enjoy!

Recipe Pro Tips

Don’t Overdo the Seasoning
Steelhead trout has a naturally rich flavor—keep it simple with salt, pepper, lemon, garlic, and herbs.
Don’t Overcook
Trout cooks quickly! Remove it when it flakes easily with a fork but is still moist inside.
Watch the Temperature
Cook to about 125–130°F (52–54°C) for moist, tender results (it will continue cooking slightly after).
Add Fat for Flavor
Butter or olive oil helps keep the fish moist and adds richness.
Brighten with Acid
Finish with lemon juice or a splash of vinegar to balance the richness.
Try Different Cooking Methods
- Bake for easy, hands-off cooking
- Pan-sear for crispy skin
- Grill for smoky flavor
Pat Dry Before Cooking
Dry the surface to help it sear properly instead of steaming.
Pair It Well
Serve with:
- Roasted vegetables
- Rice or quinoa
- Light salads
Pro Tip
Steelhead trout is similar to salmon but cooks a bit faster—keep an eye on it!
