How To Make An Organized Grocery List {Free Printable}

By Tara Noland on March 14, 2018 | Updated July 8, 2023

The first step to productive grocery shopping is making a list of the things you need to purchase. So we have for you today How to Make an Organized Grocery List {Free Printable}.

Going grocery shopping without an organized checklist can lead to you aimlessly wandering the store without a detailed plan, only to go home with a bunch of things you don’t need and missing those that you do. Having a grocery list has many benefits like keeping you on the healthy track and preventing additional trips to the store.

Creating an organized grocery list doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. In fact, it can be easy and fun, especially when you have a free printable to use.

Feeling organized in any aspect of your life takes away that horrible stress factor.

How to Make an Organized Grocery List {Free Printable}

Follow These Steps to Make an Organized Grocery List

Step 1: Have a Running List

Have a “to buy” list somewhere in your home. Use this running list to keep tabs on items that you have run out of or are close to needing to be replenished.

Step 2: Meal Plan

Meal planning is the best way to ensure that you are only purchasing items that you require, keeping in budget and staying organized.

Step 2: Take Inventory of Staple Items

The first step to creating a grocery list is to go through your pantry and fridge and take inventory of any staple items that need replenishing. Eggs, Milk, Butter, Granola Bars and any canned goods you use regularly need to be a priority.

Step 3: Look Up Coupons

Look up different coupons and specials that are available to you prior to solidifying your list. This way, if you find a deal on something that you normally run out of quickly, you can stock up and save money.

Step 4: Print a Grocery List Printable

We have a FREE online printable to help you manage your grocery list. Using our printable can help you easily curate your grocery list in a quick and well-organized manner, with a beautiful and well planned template.

Step 5: Organize by Aisle

To make your shopping trip less time consuming and labour intensive, organize you list according to the aisles in your grocery store. If you divide your list into sections, it’s much easier to ensure that no items go overlooked. This is why using our free printable is helpful as it’s already divided into neat sections.

Step 6: Specify Quantity

The quantity of one item is very important when creating your list. It is good to know how much of an item you need to get in advance.

Step 7: Check Your List

Make sure to go over your list and make any final edits before it’s time to leave for the store. If necessary, write out a good copy of your list.

Step 8: Don’t Leave it

Don’t leave your list on the counter! Make sure that you put it somewhere you won’t leave it behind before you leave for your shopping trip.

There are many great ways to ensure that your list is well organized. Make sure to keep tabs on items you run out of often, look up coupons and use our Grocery List Printable whenever possible.

    I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken the time to create a well-organized list to leave it on the counter! that’s probably the most important of steps (other than creating the list in the first place).

    I had to laugh at your last item on the list…”Don’t leave it!” I do this all the time and end up at home with only half the things on my list I needed and a bunch of things I didn’t need at all. Thanks for the list!

    I really need to to this! I spend way too much money and time in the grocery and somehow forget the most important thing I needed. This looks like a great way to get organized.
