What is Pineapple Whip?
Dole Whip is a sweet and creamy pineapple-flavored soft-serve ice cream created by Dole back in the 1980s. It’s best known for emphasizing the tangy flavor of the pineapple while maintaining the sweetness of traditional ice cream. Although the pineapple dole whip has been popularized by Disney’s amusement parks, this treat can be found all around the world—especially in tropical locations where pineapples are a sweet staple.

Here are the dole whip ingredients. Close your eyes, and you will be transported to Disney World.
Ingredients
- Pineapple Chunks—Whether it is store-bought or home sliced and frozen, the real pineapple is the star of this tropical treat. You can buy frozen pineapple too in the freezer section.
- Pineapple Juice—I prefer the Dole brand, but any pineapple juice will work great. The fresher, the better!
- Vanilla Ice Cream—Or, for a vegan option, use 1/3 cup of coconut milk.
- Granulated Sugar—Balances out the acidity from the pineapple.
- Vanilla Extract—Balances all the flavors and brings the whole sorbet together.

How to Make Homemade Dole Whip
In a blender on medium-high speed, blend together the frozen pineapple, pineapple juice, vanilla ice cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract and blend until smooth; the mixture will appear creamy.
Pour your dole-whip mixture into a loaf pan and place it in the freezer to chill for 30 minutes. This allows the pineapple whip to set before being served.
Remove the pan from the freezer, serve, and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make other dole whip flavors?
Yes! Substitute the pineapple with your other favorite fruits. Cherry, orange, raspberry, lime, coconut, and mango are a few of my other favorites.
Is dole whip a Disney thing?
It’s a pretty iconic Disney treat. However, other places, such as the Dole plantation in Hawaii, also sell pineapple whip.
Is dole whip ice cream or sorbet?
Because this pineapple dole whip recipe is made using dairy, it is considered an ice cream. However, if you make the non-dairy version of this dish, I would consider it a sorbet.
How to Store Leftover Pineapple Dole Whip
Dole Whip can be stored in the freezer in any kind of airtight container for up to 2 months. You can even leave it in the loaf tin and cover the ice cream with a layer or two of cling wrap. Make sure to let the ice cream thaw slightly before attempting to scoop and serve.
Serving Suggestions
Dole Whip can be dished up with an ice cream scoop. Alternatively, you can use a piping bag to give the whip the classic Dole Whip look found at Disney parks, as we have shown here. This treat can be served in a cone or in a cup, and I personally like to top it with a maraschino cherry and a bit of cherry syrup drizzled over top. I found that one scoop in a cone is an easy way to serve large groups, and it keeps your dishes clean.
Have extra pineapple juice? Try a Dole Whip float! Use the pineapple juice as your liquid base and scoop the ice cream into a cup with the juice. Voila—a Dole whip float!
Recipe Pro Tips!
- Be sure to thoroughly blend the mixture—unless you don’t mind having frozen pineapple chunks in your dole whip.
- When frozen for more than an hour, this dole whip can get a little hard to scoop or pipe. Simply let it thaw on the counter for about 10 minutes, and it will be soft enough to serve again.
- Want to make a Piña Colada dole whip? Try combining the coconut and pineapple flavors for a neat twist on this Puerto Rican drink.

I made this last night, using coconut milk instead of vanilla ice cream, also subbing Xylitol sweetener instead of sugar, and froze it in individual containers instead of the loaf pan. Absolutely delicious! It’s been many years since I’ve visited Disney, so I don’t have the original to compare with, but who cares? We’re big pineapple and coconut fans, so we loved the texture, the flavor – everything! And so fast and easy to make! Definitely putting it in the rotation!
P.S. – Did you know that Dole has bags of pineapple chunks in the freezer section? Perfect 3 cup amount, so no extra freezing time! 😁
