Roasted Grape Tomatoes

Roasted Grape Tomatoes are an easy appetizer, amazing with whipped feta, can be whirled into a pasta sauce or even as a side dish for meats like a steak, fish, or chicken.

One of our most popular posts is our Roasted Italian Tomatoes. We love to also use these for a side dish or to make pasta sauce. Roasting tomatoes in the oven heightens their sweetness and intensifies their flavor. Add in herbs and onions to just make your homemade sauces even better. Add this dish to our Antipasto Platter.

What Ingredients Do You Need for Roasted Grape Tomatoes

Ingredients for Roasted Grape Tomatoes

This is a great recipe to use excess grape or cherry tomatoes up if you have been growing them or see them at your local market. Sometimes I have accidentally bought too many grape tomatoes also. After I have used what I needed in salads and not to want to waste one tomato I repurpose them into an appetizer, side dish, or sauce.

Ingredients

Grape tomatoes

Olive oil

Kosher salt

Freshly ground pepper

Crushed red chili flakes

Chopped parsley

How to Make Roasted Grape Tomatoes

This is a very simple recipe to make, but the results are anything from simple. You will love these roasted little gems!

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

On a large rimmed baking sheet spread the tomatoes out in a single layer.

Drizzle the olive oil over the tomatoes then sprinkle with chili flakes, Kosher salt, and pepper and gently toss to coat.

How Long to Roast Grape Tomatoes?

Horizontal of cooked tomatoes in a wooden bowl.

Roast in a 300-degree F oven for 30 minutes. I like to start off with a slow-roast and then later increase the temperature to get some char.

After 30 minutes, increase the heat to 425 degrees F (while the tomatoes are still in the oven) and continue to roast for 10-15 minutes more.

Once the tomatoes begin to char, they are done. This might even happen before the oven has reached  425F.

Remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool.

Refrigerate until ready to eat. Eat cold, at room temperature, or warm.

Just before serving, sprinkle with Kosher salt, a dash of olive oil, and chopped parsley.

Note: Serve these with whipped feta as an appetizer or side dish, whirl the tomatoes to make an excellent base for a sauce, or serve on top of pasta with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese.

If your tomatoes are acidic, sprinkle with a little sugar too.

What To Do With Roasted Grape Tomatoes?

Roasted grape tomatoes and whipped feta on a spoon.

I love to serve roasted grape tomatoes with whipped feta cheese or a Tangy Fresh Feta Dip. The combination of flavors is addictive. Serve this simply on a crostini, crackers, or fresh bread.

Along that same vein roasted tomatoes make an excellent bruschetta and can be substituted for fresh and then mixed with traditional ingredients of garlic, olive oil, basil, Parmesan cheese, and more. This is also great on chicken like in our Cheesy Chicken Bruschetta!

I love to throw some in a pasta sauce like a marinara. The bold roasted flavor just adds more to the sauce.

Have you ever tried roasted grape tomatoes with a steak? The gorgeous tomatoes pair up beautifully with a salty grilled steak and makes an impressive side dish to serve.

Can You Freeze Roasted Tomatoes

You can freeze tomatoes at any stage. If I have too many leftover fresh grape tomatoes I freeze them on a cookie sheet and then put them into zipper bags with a date in the freezer. Then I just add a handful or two as I need them. They are great to add to soups, stews, pasta sauces, etc.

If I have roasted too many cherry or grape tomatoes I just let them cool completely and then put them into an air-tight container. I freeze them for up to 3 months. They make an additional robust tomato flavor to any pasta sauce. You can make them for this reason only and freeze them.

What is the Difference Between Cherry Tomatoes and Grape Tomatoes?

Horizontal shot of roasted tomatoes in a wooden bowl

The main difference between grape tomatoes and cherry tomatoes is their shape. Grape tomatoes are shaped long and oval and the size of grapes while cherry tomatoes are more rounded like cherries are.

Although both tastes just like a perfect little tomato cherry tomatoes can be very sweet, almost like candy some of them when I pick them off the vine in the summer from our plants.

Grape tomatoes are a bit more meaty and crunchy while cherry tomatoes are very juicy sometimes bursting and squirting while you eat them. Your best bet is to pop the entire tomato into your mouth so this doesn’t happen accidentally getting tomato juice everywhere.

Grape tomatoes are more of a classic tomato flavor. Cherry are sweeter, fresher and more of a crisp bite.

You can grow either of these tomatoes in containers with great success. We grow them in abundance every year on our deck. Sometimes we have so many we make Cherry Tomato Jam which is excellent.

Roasted Grape Tomatoes

Tara Noland
Roasted Grape Tomatoes take on a whole different flavor profile from fresh as they become sweeter and have more intense tomato goodness. Perfect for an appetizer with whipped feta, as bruschetta, or in a pasta sauce. They make a great side dish also with meats, chicken, and fish.
