Traditionally flautas or rolled tacos are deep-fried in hot oil, but that adds in a huge element to making these, and also lots more calories that I don’t think are needed. Let me show you how simple these are to make and still get them golden brown and delicious.
Kids will go crazy for them, parents will love the ease of making them. Plus they have simple ingredients that you can find in any grocery store!
INGREDIENTS
- Skinless chicken breast, cooked and shredded
- Salsa, thicker is better than a runnier salsa
- Monterey Jack cheese
- Cheddar cheese
- Flour tortillas
- Cooking spray
- Condiments like salsa, sour cream and guacamole
How do you Make Flautas from Scratch?
In a medium bowl mix together the shredded chicken and salsa. Set aside. Grate cheese and mix together, set aside.
Put a heaping tablespoon of the cooked chicken breast mixture in the center of each tortilla. Top with both kinds of cheese and roll up and place seam side down on the prepared baking sheet.
Repeat with all the tortillas until chicken and cheese are gone. Spray the flautas with cooking spray. Pretty easy eh?
What is the Difference Between Flautas and Taquitos?
As far as I can tell flautas and taquitos are pretty similar except taquitos are made with a corn tortilla and flautas are made with flour tortillas. They both are rolled and both have meat inside and are fried or baked.
You may order a flauta in a restaurant and end up with a corn tortilla. These two names tend to be interchangeable at times. Taquitos usually are tighter rolled and smaller while flautas (from their name flute) can be larger and made with bigger tortillas.
Whichever you want to call them they are delicious and make a great easy, quick, and satisfying family meal or party appetizer.
How Many Calories Are in a Chicken Flauta?
For our recipe today we have the calorie count around 100 per flauta. Just make sure if you are counting calories that you don’t laden on the guacamole and sour cream and look for lighter condiments like salsa or a fresh pico de gallo.
They are satisfying and filling so you don’t need to eat a plate full of them. They will also freeze well and are a great snack to pull out and heat up quickly in a toaster oven.
Do You Eat Flautas With Your Hands?
No utensils required!! Flautas are an easy handheld recipe, so another great reason to snack on them by the TV, for game day, as a casual dinner, great kid’s fare and on and on!
Do you want to add more to the flautas? To the chicken mixture, you can add refried beans, add onion, or a splash of lime juice. Try beef or chorizo inside for a change but traditionally flautas are made with chicken.
Keep the flautas small; they aren’t a burrito that is stuffed full. If you do want to deep fry them, I would use less filling even and roll tightly and secure with a toothpick. Deep fry to 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.
