The History of Cherry Floats

While the exact origins of cherry floats are unknown, they’ve been a beloved summer treat in the United States for decades. Some historians believe that the recipe was first popularized in the 1950s when soda fountains were all the rage. Made with soda water, cherry syrup, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, cherry floats quickly became a favorite among Americans looking for a sweet, refreshing pick-me-up.

Over the years, the recipe has evolved, with some variations using different types of soda or adding in extra flavors like chocolate or caramel. But no matter how you make it, the classic combination of cherry and ice cream remains a staple of summertime cuisine.

Variations of Cherry Floats

One of the best things about cherry floats is that there are so many different ways to make them. If you’re looking for a classic recipe. Start with a tall glass filled with lemon-lime soda and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Then, add in a few tablespoons of cherry syrup and watch as the flavors swirl together to create a delicious, refreshing treat.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, try mixing things up with different types of soda or ice cream flavors. For example, you could use root beer instead of plain soda water for a twist on the classic float. You can also experiment with different types of fruit syrups to create a custom flavor that’s uniquely your own.

And if you’re looking for an adult version of this classic treat, try adding a splash of your favorite liquor, like rum or vodka, to give your cherry float an extra kick. See our recipes below!
