Why is it Called a Dump Cake?

A Dump Cake is an American invention and gets its name because you literally dump in the ingredients and bake, no mixing required. The dessert is similar to a cobbler but with a cake-like topping instead of a biscuit topping. It is not a dessert that you cut, but rather take a scoop out of the dish.

For a dump cake, you can use fresh fruit, frozen fruit, pie filling, or canned fruit.

What is in a Strawberry Dump Cake?

Ingredients for Strawberry Dump Cake.

Just a few really simple ingredients for this easy strawberry dump cake recipe. If you come across a lot of fresh strawberries for a great price, this is such an easy dessert to whip up that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Fresh or frozen strawberries, sliced – I have used both for a dump cake or also pie filling or canned fruit works too. You can change up the fruit in this dessert too.

White sugar – If your strawberries are very sweet, then use less sugar. I do recommend white granulated sugar for this recipe.

Yellow cake mix – You can try other flavors of cake mix like a golden or white cake mix, or a chocolate cake mix would be really good with the strawberries also. If you are a strawberry lover, then a strawberry cake mix may be the answer.

Water – You can put this into a spray bottle to make sure all the cake mix gets a little moisture.

Butter melted – I like a lot of buttery goodness in this recipe.

Cooking spray – Pretty simple here; it just keeps everything from sticking.

Vanilla Ice Cream or Whipped Cream – Either of these works well, or get a little funky with a salted caramel or maple walnut, etc.

How to Make a Strawberry Dump Cake

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Spray a 9 x 13” pan with cooking spray.

Add the strawberries to the pan and spread out so they cover the bottom of the pan.

Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the strawberries.

Then sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the strawberries and sugar.

Dump cake ready for the oven.

Pour the water and melted butter evenly over the pan. Do not mix but make sure all of the cake mix is covered. You can even spray the water on to make sure it is covered too.

Place in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown and the strawberries are soft. If you have used frozen fruit, this will probably take about 20 minutes longer.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving.

Enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Recipe Pro Tips!

What is the biggest mistake to avoid when making a dump cake?

The biggest mistake to avoid is the urge to mix the cake; if you do so with the cake mix on top of the berries, you will have a mess.

Is dump cake good the next day?

Yes, you can even make it the day ahead, let it cool, and then wrap it with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. Leftovers can be dealt with the same way. The fruit will spoil quickly if left at room temperature for days.

Let the cake come to room temperature before serving. Your strawberry dump cake will last 4-5 days in the refrigerator if it is not eaten first.

I am not sure I recommend freezing, I honestly have never done that, and the fruit may get watery and the crust mushy.

Other Variations

Other variations I have seen are using a butter pat method where instead of melting the butter, you top the cake mix with pats of butter.

Also, a jello method where you add sugar-free jello, like a strawberry, to the berries works well; I have heard this with our rhubarb dump cake, also.

These two methods though I have not tried yet.
