This Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Pie is a time-honored recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation. This is like a great grandma’s recipe; it has been around for that long. This oatmeal pie is amazing when served warm with vanilla ice cream. The crispy top layer and gooey, caramelly filling are so delicious.

If you like a homemade pie recipe like this one, then also try our Coconut Cream Pie, Amish Peanut Butter Pie, Best Homemade Cherry Pie, or Lemon Meringue Pie; they are all classics. Or try our Date Pinwheel Cookies for another nostalgic treat.

Overhead shot of Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Pie

This is a perfect homey comfort vintage pie for Thanksgiving and the holidays. One that if you introduce to people, they will love from the start and ask for again and again. It is said to have come into favor during the Civil War when pecans were in short supply, but oatmeal was still plentiful. If you love oatmeal then also try this Oatmeal Bread Recipe, so homey and good.

It really takes very little time to pull together and can also be offered at Thanksgiving and Christmas with more traditional pies like pumpkin pie, apple pie or a Cranberry White Chocolate Cheesecake.

What is Oatmeal Pie?

Horizontal of a slice of pie.

This ooey-gooey delicious oatmeal pie is similar to pecan pie. It was made when pecans were too expensive or hard to get. So instead of using pecans (great for anyone with an allergy), oatmeal is used, and so many of us love oatmeal. If you love pecan pie, you will love this recipe.

The oatmeal gives the pie an amazing crisp texture that is both crunchy and chewy—a delightful contrast to the rich and sweet interior of the pie.

What Pie Crust to Make?

Rolled Out Pie Crust

You can make a fresh homemade pie crust. We have an excellent recipe for you in our How to Make a Perfect Pie Crust Recipe.

If you don’t want to go to that extra work to make a pie shell, you can also use a store-bought pie crust. Of late, I have been really liking the pie crusts you find in the dairy as opposed to the frozen ones that tend to break and are usually served in a tin pan.

Buying them from the dairy section, they come in a rolled pie dough, which you unroll and place in your own pie plate, so much easier to work with and get superior results too.

What is in Oatmeal Pie?

Ingredients for Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Pie

These are very simple ingredients; most you will have in your pantry, all ready and waiting for you.

I always store my coconut along with any opened nuts in the freezer to keep them fresher longer. I then never have an issue with them being stale.

Ingredients

  • 9-inch pie crust (I used homemade)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup granulated sugar; brown sugar can be substituted using 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon table salt
  • 1 cup coconut, sweetened flakes
  • ¾ cup quick oats

How to Make Oatmeal Pie

This is a simple recipe with few ingredients. Let’s start to make it now.

Heat oven to 350°F.

Prepare a 9-inch pie crust.

In a large bowl that is microwave-safe, melt the butter.

Add corn syrup and sugar. Mix with a wire whisk.

Then add eggs and whisk until combined.

Next, add the vanilla and salt.

Finally, add the coconut and oats. Fold in with a rubber spatula.

Pour filling into prepared unbaked pie crust.

Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until crust is golden brown and center does not wiggle. If the crust gets too brown, cover with thin strips of foil or pie crust saver to prevent excessive browning.

Let stand at least 2 hours before serving to cool completely. You want the middle to set, and this will happen as it cools down.

Can I Make The Pie Ahead of Time?

Three slices in a pie plate.

You can make and bake the oatmeal pie the morning of or even the day before you want to serve it. If well covered and in an air-tight container, it can be frozen for up to 3 months. Just thaw at room temperature and serve.

If you have leftovers, cover well and refrigerate for up to 3 days. No pie like this in my house is going to last long, though.

What to Serve This Oatmeal Pie With?

Overhead of pie on a plate with ice cream and the full pie in a pie plate.

Serve this pie like you would your beloved pecan pie with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Keep it simple with the extras to let the pie shine through and not fight with other ingredients. Enjoy!!

You could substitute a finely chopped nut like walnut, pecan or even almonds for the coconut.

Can maple syrup be successfully substituted for the corn syrup? Will that alter the baking time or temperature? We don’t use a lot of corn syrup.

This is an old family recipe where they used corn syrup years ago. You could try maple syrup but it is thinner so not sure how it will work. Maybe try slightly less but bake the same.
