What Are Cocoa Bombs?

Showing the inside of a hot chocolate bomb with two balls finished.

Hot Cocoa Bombs or Hot Chocolate Bombs are made with an outer shell of melted milk chocolate in a silicone mold. The cups are then filled with hot chocolate mix or hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows and sealed together.

These very cool treats have taken the internet by storm. Amber found them initially on Instagram and immediately shared them with me thinking that they would be fun to make and share!

Who doesn’t like a novel treat and one made with hot chocolate to warm you on a cold day or night?

Once the balls are made, they are easy to serve; just add them to a cup or mug of very hot milk. You do this by pouring the hot milk over them. Then to everyone’s delight, you watch them spin and explode with chocolate while the marshmallows float to the top.

A quick stir and you have an excellent hot chocolate to enjoy!

Ingredients

  • Milk chocolate chips
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Hot milk (your choice of fat %)
  • White chocolate chips for topping (optional)
  • Additions are mentioned below if desired

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Bombs
  1. Hot chocolate bombs are easy to make. Just follow along with these simple instructions and you will have excellent results. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate as it can burn and seize. Over a pot of boiling water is the best and most reliable way to heat the chocolate but a microwave can also be used if done correctly.

Giving them a trial run is always best, have patience, and work with trial and error until you have them mastered.

  1. Melt the milk chocolate chips in a bowl set over a pot of boiling water. Gently stir until the chips have melted. You can also do this in the microwave. Heat the chips in intervals of about 15 seconds, stir and continue to heat as needed.
  2. Add a large spoonful of melted chocolate into each of the 6 cavities in your mold. Smooth it up the sides with the back of a spoon. Be sure to get it fully up the sides.

Refrigerate or freeze for a few minutes to set.

Add an additional spoonful of melted chocolate into each of the cavities and repeat the process to ensure a thick enough ball. Return to the refrigerator for 30 minutes or freezer to set for 5 minutes or so.

Filling the Bombs

  1. Gently remove the half rounds of set chocolate from the molds. If you’re using a silicone mold, these should come out fairly easily.
  2. Fill 3 of the halves with 2 tablespoons each of your favorite hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows.
  3. Place a plate over the pot of boiling water to heat and then press each of the empty half rounds against it to slightly melt the edges or rim of the half sphere.
  4. Place the empty half rounds over the filled ones to seal.
  5. If your seams are not tight enough, warm the back of a spoon and run it along the seam to seal.
  6. Melt the white chocolate chips (or candy melts) and drizzle over the filled balls, if desired. Return to the refrigerator or freezer to set.

How to Use the Bombs

To use, heat the milk, place one ball into a mug and pour the hot milk over it.

The ball will burst open and release its contents. Stir until smooth, fully melted, and best of all you can now enjoy a hot cup of cocoa.

Now let’s learn about different flavorings, toppings, and additions!

Other Flavors for Hot Chocolate Bombs

Closer look at hot chocolate bombs

These Chocolate Balls can be flavored in a variety of ways to make different hot chocolate bomb recipes.

Use white chocolate chips to paint the molds if you like a white hot chocolate and add white hot chocolate into the spheres.

Decorate the tops with flavored candies to add to your hot chocolate bombs. Think of candies that will melt fast and add flavor like crushed cinnamon hearts, crushed candy canes, gingerbread sprinkles, etc.

Add in a bit of pumpkin spice added with sugar to get that wonderful fall flavor into your cocoa. Or you can add in various powdered ingredients like vanilla sugar, orange sugar (used for cocktail rims), egg nog drink mix, salted caramel drink mix, or instant coffee. With these additions, be careful of the sugar content to not make it too sweet. Add in unsweetened cocoa or lower sugar cocoa. Better yet, do a trial run and make up a hot chocolate with your creations before putting them in your bombs.

Once made, you can add toppings to your hot chocolate like whipped cream, chocolate sauce, salted caramel sauce, fruit syrups and more!

How to Store Hot Chocolate Bombs

Hot cocoa in a mug with cocoa bombs on plaid

To store bombs you can keep them at room temperature if you are gifting them like in a stocking or gift bag, but until then, I would keep them refrigerated or even in the freezer. Be careful of handling them too much as the heat of your hands can melt the chocolate.

Best kept in an airtight container that won’t crush them and keep them from getting bounced around in the refrigerator or freezer.

To gift them, place them in a clear cellophane bag and tie with a bow. Or purchase a cute mug for hot chocolate and place a hot chocolate bomb inside and wrap with cello. An ornament box would also work to give your chocolate ball creation in.

I recommend a better quality chocolate chip than just plain Nestle. I use either Guittard or Ghirardelli but this is up to you.
