What is Stuffed French Toast?

Basically, it is a French toast sandwich! You make the sandwich with two slices of bread and a cream cheese and berry filling; in our case, it is strawberries. It can easily be made with gluten-free bread too.

What Is Stuffed French Toast Made Of?

Ingredients for Stuffed French Toast.

This Stuffed French Toast recipe may look decadent, but it’s super simple to make and only requires a handful of ingredients that you likely already have on hand.

Ingredients

Thick, Stale Bread – (See note on Bread below) Using thick bread that is a day or two stale makes the best French Toast and prevents the toast from getting soggy when cooked.

Strawberry Jam – Use jam, not jelly, because it has chunks of fruit in it. I like the Bon Maman brand or homemade (like this Strawberry Rhubarb Jam)!

Cream Cheese – Soften the cream cheese to room temperature so that it whips up smooth and creamy.

Lemon – Use the juice from half a lemon to flavor the cream cheese filling. It’s such a bright, tasty flavor paired with strawberry!

Powdered Sugar – Not only does this make a great topping for the Stuffed French Toast, but it also adds a smooth sweetness to the cream cheese filling.

Milk – Whole Milk or Half and Half works best for a rich, flavorful French Toast.

Eggs – These add both texture and protein to the French Toast, making it a delicious and hearty breakfast choice.

Cinnamon and Vanilla – Don’t skip these important ingredients! They add tons of flavor to the finished dish.

Butter – Melted butter on the hot skillet helps the French Toast turn golden and crispy.

Fresh Strawberries – Macerate the sliced strawberries with a couple of tablespoons of granulated sugar so that they are a soft, sweet, and juicy topping for your stuffed French Toast.

Maple Syrup – They taste great with or without Maple Syrup, so this one is optional. A little trick is that you can spread a drizzling of maple syrup on your plate first before putting the French toast on the plate. You can taste maple flavor with the last bite.

What is the Best Type of Bread to Use for French Toast?

The bread you choose for Stuffed French Toast is important! If you use thinly sliced sandwich bread, your French Toast will likely be soggy and disappointing. Pay attention to our tips and tricks for the best outcome.

The best types of bread to use for French Toast are:

  • Brioche
  • Challah
  • Texas Toast (Pictured in this recipe)
  • French Bread
  • Croissant

My favorite bread to use is Challah Bread, but it isn’t always easy to find. I can usually find Texas Toast (the plain variety, not the garlic bread) at most grocery stores, so it’s the bread I use the most often.

Pro Tip: If your bread isn’t stale, place a wire rack on a sheet pan, layer the bread slices on the rack, and bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 or 4 minutes on each side.

How to Make Stuffed French Toast

Strawberries and sugar in a bowl.

First, toss the sliced, fresh strawberries in a bowl with two or three tablespoons of granulated sugar. Let them sit and macerate while you prepare the French Toast.

Next, whip the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and fresh lemon juice until it is smooth and fluffy.

Topping each slice of Texas toast with jam.

Generously slather the strawberry jam on one side of each French Toast bread slice.

Adding the cream cheese filling on top of the jam.

On half of the slices, dollop two generous tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture into the middle of the bread. Spread out a thick layer onto each slice.

Then form a sandwich with each of the cream cheese slices and the remaining jam slices.

In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Melt two tablespoons of butter in the skillet.

Dipping stuffed French toast in an egg mixture.

Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, turning to evenly coat both sides. Let excess egg drip off the bread before placing on the skillet.

Cook for about 3 minutes per side or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

Top with the Fresh Strawberry Slices, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, and/or maple syrup, and serve immediately. Every bite is a little slice of heaven!

Recipe Pro Tips!

How do you make French toast not soggy on the inside?

The best French Toast is crisp, not soggy. To prevent the bread from getting soggy, keep in mind the following things:

  • Use stale bread that is a day or two old, or lightly toast the bread beforehand.
  • Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture, but don’t let them sit soaking up the egg mixture; the bread will end up with too much of the liquid.
  • Cook over medium-high heat. If the heat is too high or too low, the bread cooks too fast or too slow, causing the middle to be soggy.

How To Serve French Toast

You can change up a few things in making this French toast. Here are a few ideas for you:

  • Serve with whipped cream, warm your maple syrup, add different berries like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries or other fruit like bananas.
  • Omit the fruit and add in some cinnamon sugar and nuts like walnuts or pecans.
  • For the filling, you can omit the lemon and add in vanilla extract and maybe even peanut butter for a different flare.
