How to Roast Chicken in an Air Fryer
It is easy to make a delicious roast chicken recipe in your air fryer. Let me show you how!
Preheat the Air Fryer to 320 F / 160 C and line a parchment paper at the bottom. You can use a little cooking spray on your basket, but if it is non-stick, then it is not necessary.
Rinse the chicken under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Getting the chicken dry with a paper towel will help the butter adhere better. Place chicken on a large plate. Season the whole chicken and under the skin with salt and pepper.
In a small bowl, mix mustard, butter, thyme, parsley, and garlic. Rub the mustard mixture on the chicken outside and inside the cavity. With the help of your fingers, also rub under the skin.
Stuff cavity with 4 garlic cloves.
Place chicken in the Air Fryer basket upside down and roast the chicken for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, flip the chicken on the other side. Roast for 20 minutes, remove the basket and pour honey on top of the chicken and brush gently. Place the basket back and roast for another 10-15 minutes. You are looking at approximately 50 minutes to 60 minutes of cooking time.
Open Air Fryer halfway and let the chicken rest for 10 – 15 minutes before carving and serving.
Serve with your favorite side dish and the pan juices from the Air Fryer.

How to Check if Chicken is Well Cooked in Air Fryer?
Check if the chicken has an internal temperature of 165 F | 74 C. I love using our Thermapen One instant-read thermometer for an accurate and quick reading. In my opinion, a must-have for any home cook. I usually like to check in the meatiest part of the thigh and also the breast.
FAQs and Helpful Hints
How to get juicier chicken?
Brining your chicken will give you a juicier and flavorful roast.
How to get crispy skin?
Butter in this recipe will create a deeper caramelization because of the sugar present in milk.
Can I use dried herbs?
Yes. I am using fresh, but dried herbs are also good for roasting. Just use a bit less than indicated.
How to reserve chicken leftovers?
Chicken leftovers can be served in so many ways: Chicken soup, stew, sandwiches, salads, wraps, buffalo dips.
How to store leftovers?
Allow to cool down completely. Cut chicken into individual pieces, then place in an airtight container or aluminum foil. Store for up to 3 days.
Don’t leave it longer than 2 hours at room temperature before storing and storing separately from raw meat.
How to freeze leftovers?
If you want to freeze the chicken, wrap well in foil or plastic and label the date and the food. Defrost completely before reheating.
How to serve?
With mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, roasted butternut squash, green beans, or pasta, to name a few.
Don’t have an air fryer
This recipe can be put together in a large skillet and roasted in the oven.
Can it be made in Instant Pot?
I have a duo that is an instant pot and an air fryer. I would definitely use the air fryer option for this recipe. The IP makes it tender and juicy, but it is basically steaming it and won’t give you that crispy skin.
